The unknown universe of the Autonomous Nervous System: the Polyvagal Theory
Abstract. The work describes Stephen Porges’ Polyvagal Theory. This theory describes an innovative role of the autonomous nervous system. The function of the vagus nerve in behavioral regulation is highlighted, with references to the CAN system (Central Autonomic Network). The System acts in “social engagement” as the neuroscientific basis of learning, allowing for more detailed clarification of functional aspects that were previously partially in the shade.

Key words: autonomic nervous system; vagus nerve; behavioral regulation
